API of the Week: Trulioo Provides Instant Identity Verification

By Rich Tehrani

As hackers have become more successful, they have also become emboldened and are able to attack companies via Ransomware and malware as well as individuals via password theft. As ever-increasing amounts of crucial information are available electronically, the challenge then becomes how to verify identity on a global scale.

Founded in 2011, Trulioo launched GlobalGateway, its online electronic identity verification service, in 2014. Developed for an international market, the product was created to help businesses and organizations verify identities online to mitigate fraud and financial crime activities.

The company’s API caught my eye as it allows developers to add a tremendous level of value to whatever solutions they are building. FinTech and HealthTech are just a few of the markets which will benefit from solutions like this.

To learn more, I conducted an API of the Week interview with Rob Hartley, VP of Product. This interview is being done in conjunction with the All About The API conference to be held this July in Las Vegas. We hope to see you there!

What APIs do you have available?

GlobalGateway, Trulioo’s instant identity verification API, is a vendor and country-agnostic solution that provides consistent and normalized set of data fields for client service integration, which translates to a cost-effective solution that offers scalability, flexibility and adaptability.

What are the benefits/ solutions they help provide?

Trulioo tackles one of the most ambitious challenges in global identity verification—to build a universal solution for fraud prevention and compliance systems worldwide. The lack of harmonization of in-country data privacy hinders development of a global compliance program, especially for countries transacting and expanding across borders. Trulioo is building a layer of trust on the Internet by providing organizations the ability to verify the identities of more than 4 billion people in over 50 countries, worldwide through a single API integration.

GlobalGateway has been designed from the ground up to satisfy global AML and KYC requirements, and by taking this approach our solution also easily serves non regulatory use cases, such as fraud and risk mitigation.

Through a single API, our clients gain access to over 150 data sources within seconds. By comparing customer data inputs against information collected and hosted by trusted and reliable data sources, GlobalGateway offers transparent identity verification capabilities for reducing fraud and satisfying regulatory compliance requirements. Clients also have the ability to customize their rules engine for better match rates, significantly improving customer on boarding and enhanced user-experience.

What new business opportunities do they potentially open up for your partners?

By providing a normalized identity verification solution with custom rule sets that can be used to instantly verify 4 billion consumers worldwide to meet cross-border compliance requirements, businesses can easily and quickly onboard customers while adhering to international Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) rules, which were previously done manually or in person across multiple platforms.

Trulioo’s Normalized API enables businesses to securely access over 150 trusted global data sources for real-time global identity verification. Our technology creates efficiencies in the workflow that lower operating costs for businesses transacting globally by automating systems, eliminating manual processes, and bypassing long approval processes and cumbersome integration.

Why should developers/ decision makers choose to be part of your ecosystem?

Building and establishing trust is part of Trulioo’s mission. We recognize the necessity of having an ironclad information security management system in place to provide secure and trusted services to our customers and partners. As an ISO 27001-certified company, we are serious about information security and have adopted international best practices designed to mitigate risks while meeting regulatory and legal compliance standards. This reflects the value that we place on respecting the privacy of consumers by ensuring that we have adequate measures in place to protect against unauthorized access of information.

Our team has conducted due diligence to ensure that the global data sources we are providing access to through our GlobalGateway API are trustworthy and reliable. Data integrity is essential especially as it pertains to regulatory compliance, both in regards to the accuracy of the data and in its transparency. The sources have been vetted with strict security and compliance standards. Being fully transparent and trusted in regards to data flow, data retention, and data use are key elements to success when handling sensitive data, which are all important things we take to heart.

What are some of the cooler solutions that have been developed using your APIs?

Is it even possible to have a cooler solution than Trulioo’s global ID verification solution – I think not. However, one cool solution currently being fuelled by Trulioo’s API is a global payments company. They went from product discovery to fully integrated launch across multiple countries in mere days, compared to what would normally take months (if possible at all). That’s the power of our normalized, single integration point technology because with a simple configuration update, our client is granted access to secure data sources, streamlining their existing services cross-border – a crucial scaling factor in expanding global businesses.

Who is the "customer" for your API's?

Trulioo customers include any international business that transacts across borders and can benefit from a global electronic identity verification solution to reduce fraud, mitigate risk, and adhere to global AML/KYC compliance requirements.

Trulioo is a trusted ID verification provider for 400+ companies, including some of the world’s top payments, e-commerce, and financial services providers such as PayPal, Stripe, Square, WorldRemit, Kickstarter, and Braintree.

Come see the world of APIs at All About The API. The event will feature a variety of intensive hack-a-thons, in-depth company-focused workshops helping attendees understand the value propositions from key vendors, powerful keynotes, daily and nightly networking opportunities plus an exhibit hall full of companies demonstrating the latest innovations in today’s market place.

Every business has to pay attention to the new opportunities they are presenting or potentially be displaced. We hope to see you July 18-21 2016 in Las Vegas!
