Valossa Launches Val.ai Video Recognition Platform

By Rory Lidstone
March 03, 2016

Valossa is a Finland-based company that specializes in AI-based, real-time video identification technology. This week, the company announced the launch and immediate availability of its flagship video recognition AI platform.

Dubbed Val.ai, this platform is based on years of research at the computer vision and AI labs of the University of Oulu. It is uniquely capable of analyzing movies and videos in real-time to identify more than 1,000 concepts—including places, objects and themes—from any video stream. Although this capability has far-reaching potential, Val.ai is primarily designed for service and content providers, reaching down into their video content, identifying it and making it searchable in real time. In this scenario, Val.ai adds value to content production, discovery and contextual advertisement domains.

The release of Val.ai offers a unique, scene-level understanding of video ideal for companies looking to extract more value form their video assets in the increasingly competitive video space. This is made possible thanks to years of research-backed, cutting edge machine learning, computer vision and pattern analysis techniques.

Identification of scene-specific entities, topic patterns and people indeed offers unique monetization opportunities that range from more targeted video advertising to building up next generation personalized, relevant content delivery services. After all, unlike existing video AI platforms that rely on visual analysis, Val.ai expands upon the variety of information sources—including the recognized semantics of raw video data—to provide the most holistic video analysis solution possible.

Finally, Val.ai also includes a descriptive deep search engine called Valossa Deep Search that enables natural, verbose and flexible querying for voice-controlled movie services and entertainment platforms. Voice-controlled movie discovery is currently in beta for Amazon Alexa.

For more on the latest in next generation opportunities, be sure to check out All About the API, an event bringing together companies and APIs with the developers and product managers looking to be where the next opportunity lies. The conference will take place July 18 to 21 at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas.
