SmartBear Software has announced a major upgrade to SwaggerHub, its API lifecycle management hub.
The new system allows development teams to make use of reusable components to make API design even easier.
“Modularizing API design is quickly becoming essential for faster, more consistent development," said Tony Tam vice president of products at SmartBear. "There are, however, potentially huge pitfalls to having dependencies on different components, especially when one of them changes unexpectedly. SwaggerHub Domains has been designed to bring collaboration and consistency to redundant aspects of API design."
Some of the new features include the ability to better manage private and public components easily. It also contains new features for publishing API changes, versioning and synchronizing with existing source code control platforms such as GitHub.
While source code control has been an essential tool for programmers for a long time, SwaggerHub works at a higher level, at the design of an API itself. The idea is that developers should be able to look at an API and figure out how it works without having to trawl through the source code, if they’re lucky enough to be able to have access to the source at all.
One of the biggest problems in enterprise software is how to get different components to talk to each other in an integrated system. Since every business is different, all of their different software packages get integrated differently.
APIs are an attempt to get around this complexity. Most software development today is not done from scratch, but often revolves around using preexisting components to build new applications. APIs give IT departments the ability to build custom applications easily, but APIs have to be well-managed in turn to be useful.
Some analysts believe SwaggerHub is one of the tools that can make API development much more coherent.
"APIs are core enablers of business transformation and now represent the go-to approach for integrating applications, services and micro-services across all forms of distributed IT architecture," Carl Lehmann, a 451 Research hybrid it analyst said. "Managing them requires lifecycle management tools like SwaggerHub Domains to assure their quality and efficiency of design and reuse."
A rapidly increasing need for APIs and similar measures is expected to drive big gains in this market through 2021.
