Wheelings & Dealings: Goldman Sachs Gives Video Outfit Kaltura $50M in Pre-IPO Funding

Kaltura has received $50 million in funding from Goldman Sachs’ Private Capital Investing group in what the firms say is a ramp up to the open source video platform company’s IPO.

The group’s vice president, Holger Staude, is joining Kaltura’s board as part of the deal. The timing of the IPO was not specified.

Founded in 2006, Kaltura delivers solutions that enable organizations to analyze, manage, and monetize their online videos, and to use them for educational purposes. The company also has created an ecosystem of channel partners and resellers, and it offers an array of APIs.

The solutions provided by Kaltura are part of a larger movement by companies to address enterprise streaming via platform-as-a-service models, as Steve Vonder Haar of Wainhouse Research explained in the July/August issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine.

“Vendors ranging from Microsoft and IBM to Wowza and Kaltura all are putting their best foot forward in efforts to develop broader hosted platforms that serve as the video infrastructure supporting streaming solutions developed by others,” Vonder Haar wrote.

Such platforms, he added, minimize the need for application developers to worry about such details as video encoding and distribution, thus creating the opportunity for vendors to deliver more user-centric software solutions.

In the Wainhouse Research blog last week, Vonder Haar added that Goldman Sach’s investment in Kaltura represents the firm’s second major funding of a streaming company. The first was its $25 million investment in ON24 in May.

He said that these investments can serve as something of a double-edged sword. Here he provided Brightcove as an example, explaining the company ran into problems after going public when it was unable to meet expectations for growth.

“That said, the financial commitment from Goldman Sachs represents a strong validation of the streaming technology market and Kaltura’s ultimate role it will play within the segment,” Vonder Haar blogged.
